The SPADE Royal Fijiana Project Site has been blessed with abundant water resources of stellar and unmatched purity, even by the truly pristine Fiji standards.

Quantity:  The Project Site is ideally positioned between Vanua Levu’s two widest and deepest fresh water rivers.  Moreover, the Naibulu Creek, Vunisea Creek, and the Sovani Creek- large sources of ample fresh and pure water throughout the year- flow through the land, and numerous smaller creeks of pristine water flow in many places through the project site.  There are several natural springs out of which large quantities of refreshing drinking water of remarkable purity rise out at all times, and three boreholes through which the vast tableau of pure water in the aquifer about 20-35m below surface can be hygienically tapped.

Quality: Another important characteristic that sets our Royal Fijiana Project Site apart from the conventional resort development sites is the stunning purity of the water underneath it.  According to the water assessment study conducted on the site by the Mineral Resources Department of the Ministry of Lands, the purity of the water as measured by the Total Dissolved Solids(TDS) of the water under the site (12 mg/l) far surpasses even that of the world’s most highly valued and demanded bottled water products, such as Evian (357 mg/l) and Fiji Water (220-224 mg/l).  The water in our Royal Fijana aquifers is among the purest water resources in the world, and we are committed to keeping it that way. 

As a result of the overflowing capacity and immense natural recharging rate of the protected underground aquifers, the excess water volume will be scientifically monitored, hygienically tapped, and beautifully bottled directly at the source of the aquifers at an advanced LEED-Platinum water bottling facility for the creation and production of new premium ultra-pure bottled water products, while at all times strictly maintaining and protecting as our top priority the phenomenal purity of the water resources in the remarkably unpolluted and precious Fiji aquifers.

As part of the fulfilment of our family team's mission and vision of sharing the blessings, beauty, and wellness benefits of Vanua Levu's unparalleled natural purity with those who live wide oceans apart from Fiji, we are developing a range of health and wellness products that distill and capture the essence of Fiji's most healthful organic and wildcrafted plants, from both on our Estate as well as from deep inside the crystal-clear and glittering Fiji Seas.

Depending on the particular attributes of the plant, on the natural constituents and properties of the plant we need, and on the final functional purpose of the ingredient, a variety of methods can be employed to bring out the best in each plant, that we may collect and share the aromatic, therapeutic, or restorative essence of the plants with the rest of the world in the most suitable form. 

Our philosophy is to approach the process of preserving the essence of our plants- extracting the essential oils, aromatic constituents, and beneficial therapeutic and healing compounds from our most precious plants- with the same level of commitment to utmost natural purity as in carrying out the process of lovingly cultivating, propagating, and nurturing our organic plants.    

To illustrate, there are many plants from which essential oils can be extracted with sufficient efficacy and efficiency using the old-fashioned steam distillation process, and some, such as gardenia, plumeria, jasmine, pink ginger, and neroli, for instance, whose delicate, evanescent, and precious scents and unique therapeutic and healing properties are damaged when it is subjected to such high heat. 

For plants with such sensitive and fragile aromatic compounds, most conventional producers follow a technique called the solvent extraction method, in which process various types of chemical solvents, such as petroleum ether, methanol, ethanol or hexane, are used to pull out the odoriferous lipophilic material, together with some chlorophyll and some other plant tissue including waxes and fats, from the plant.  The first output of the solvent extraction method, called a concrete, is solid in thickness and consistency.  The concrete is then further mixed with alcohol to extract the aromatic constituents from the solid, and most of the alcohol is then evaporated from the extract, leaving a concentrated and high-value final product known as an absolute.

The reason that we have opted not to use the solvent extraction method is that various undesirable harsh, toxic, or skin-irritant chemicals are mixed with the plants, but are not, and cannot be, 100% removed in the final product.  The part of the solvents still remaining in the final product, called the solvent residue- however small in percentage or quantity- can cause adverse reactions in many individuals with a fragile immune system or sensitive skin.

To overcome this major obstacle that makes it difficult, inaccessible, and even dangerous for many people to more healthfully and purely experience and delight in the indescribably soothing and soul-uplifting scents, as well as the powerfully therapeutic properties, of the precious aromatic plants, our essential oil extraction operations will take advantage of the latest advances in supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction method, which efficaciously draws out the pure essence of delicate and precious plants without leaving behind harmful solvent residues. 

In this extraction process, the plants are placed in an advanced and specialized equipment into which the CO2 gas is also filled.  The pressure inside the chamber is then increased, which causes the CO2 to temporarily turn from gas to liquid, which acts as an inert and safe but highly effective liquid solvent, which is able to diffuse throughout the plant material, extracting its aromatic and therapeutic constituents.  At the completion of the process, when the pressure is brought back down to normal atmospheric levels, the harmless carbon dioxide gas fully evaporates from the extract, leaving the highest-value final product of ultimate purity referred to as a CO2 extract.

In addition to allowing for the most effective extraction, capture, and concentration of the luxuriant aromatic constituents from some of the most delicate and heat-sensitive plants, the CO2 extraction method also draws out a wider spectrum of beneficial therapeutic compounds from the plants.  For instance, the CO2 extract of frankincense has valuable immune-system-enhancing and anti-inflammatory activity that is missing in essential oils extracted through steam distillation.

However, not all CO2 extracts are equal in quality, safety, and purity, the reason being that the nature of the final CO2 extract itself is directly determined and limited by the nature of the source of the extract.  Because the intensive and powerful supercritical CO2 extraction method even draws out most of the agricultural chemicals- such as the toxic and endocrine-disrupting synthetic fertilizers, weedicides, and pesticides- from the conventionally grown plant material, CO2 extracts of plants grown on conventional farms that resort to such chemicals will contain concentrated dosages of the dangerous chemicals.  

In contrast, the CO2 extracts of plants grown fully organically- free of all such toxic, polluting, and harmful chemicals- are also free of such adverse chemicals.  This is why organic agricultural practices and modern CO2 extraction methods are such a perfect and complementary match, the one enhancing and dramatically increasing the value of the other, and the two working together synergistically to make it possible to draw out, gather, contain, and share with the world the deep essence and the ambrosial spirit of some of the most aromatic, delicate, and healing plants of the world, grown with the purest and most healthful organic practices on our own 2,000-acre Estate in the Fiji Islands.
